Finance Committee · Meeting of October 7, 2026

Somerville's Finance Committee voted 5-0 to recommend approval of nine budget items, including a $2,082,498 bond to finish buying a fire ladder truck and rescue truck after manufacturer delays collided with a December 31 ARPA spending deadline. City Auditor Ed Beane said the city will reprogram the ARPA funds to the Poplar Street Pump Station project and borrow an equal amount instead, cutting roughly $2 million from future pump station bonding. The panel also debated a $169,000 Urban Area Security Initiative grant for school security equipment, with Councilor Scott raising "the obligations that accepting federal funds from the Department of Homeland Security place on the city," though Chair Ben Wheeler said the grant predates 2025 federal term changes.

The committee accepted $355,604 in Department of Mental Health grants for police crisis intervention and jail diversion programs; Scott noted the department is nearing "the most well-funded department in the city of Somerville" after more than $1.5 million in grants this year.
