Finance Committee · Meeting of October 29, 2026

Somerville's Finance Committee voted 5-0 to recommend approval of a $34 million, five-year trash hauling contract with Boston Carting Services LLC, plus five other budget items. Commissioner of Public Works Eric Wiseman said the deal freezes 2026 collection rates for two years, then adds a 4 percent increase, with a projected $2.3 million in savings and new school-zone safety restrictions. Councillor Strezzo pushed to hold a $12,844.97 Medicaid billing invoice in committee, asking "was this a staff" issue that could have been handled in-house, but the panel approved it after Intergovernmental Affairs Director Amanda Najem-Williams promised written answers before the council's November 12 meeting.

The committee also advanced a $100,000 arts grant appropriation, with staff reporting 179 applications requesting $659,000, and a $545,649 transfer correcting a budget allocation error affecting six inspectional-services positions.
