Finance Committee · Meeting of September 4, 2026

SOMERVILLE — The Somerville Finance Committee voted 5-0 to recommend approval of all 14 agenda items, including $332,497 for soil remediation tied to a historic train yard spill near 50 Tufts Street. Councilor Strezzo pressed Infrastructure and Asset Management Director of Finance Michael Richards on whether residents have been informed of potential exposure, asking "and the spill in the 1970s in the train yard?" amid a shaky phone connection. Chair Ben Wheeler questioned whether the city could recover added costs if cleanup exceeds the funded amount and whether the property owner is released from further liability.

The committee also approved a $187,200 state climate grant for a tree-canopy and sidewalk program, two Blue Bikes grants totaling $452,662.85, and an $8,800 fix for deputy police chiefs' fiscal 2027 cost-of-living raises, which Chief Administrative Officer Wells said had been mistakenly left out of the original budget. All five members, Link, Strezzo, Hart, Scott and Wheeler, voted yes on the final consolidated roll call.
