Somerville Conservation Commission Defers Garden Meeting, Advances Compost Giveaway Plan

Somerville's Conservation Commission deferred its annual community garden meeting to March and cleared a series of housekeeping items at its February 24 remote session. Kate Bossingham, Environmental Policy Manager in the city's Office of Sustainability and Environment, presented a plan to host a public compost giveaway at Glen Park Community Garden during Sustainable Week in early May, with between 10 and 35 cubic yards of compost available through the city's Curbside Food Waste Collection Pilot, which currently has about 280 of a targeted 1,200 households enrolled. Conservation Agent Malik Drayton said DPW's snow removal response to a letter from the commission was the strongest on record, with DEP circuit rider Alicia Galen confirming no emergency disposal near resource areas is imminent.

Drayton committed to delivering a pending DCR permit amendment for signatures by end of day February 26 — the edge of the 21-day signing window. Chair David Turn reported the Community Preservation Committee awarded $74,000 to Buddy's Diner and that four names have been sent to the mayor to fill two long-open commissioner seats.
