Somerville's Legislative Matters Committee heard more than three hours of testimony on a proposed ethical procurement ordinance tied to Israel's war in Gaza but took no vote on it. Chair J.T. Scott presided as dozens of residents spoke for and against the measure, which stems from a November ballot question; supporters cited "11,598" yes votes, while ADL New England regional director Samantha Joseph countered that the question drew only "22 percent" of registered voters and called the ordinance "unconstitutional." Human Rights Commission member Brian Sokol estimated implementation costs near $2 million for switching school technology vendors alone, plus $1,000-an-hour legal costs.
The committee also heard petitions on police body-worn cameras and on recognizing the Davis Square Neighborhood Council, voting 5-0 only to approve minutes and adjourn. All three items remain in committee, with written comment accepted through September 11 and a Davis Square recognition vote expected September 15.
