Somerville's Legislative Matters Committee unanimously advanced two tenant-protection measures and sent a body-camera policy to the full council without a recommendation.
Legislative Matters Committee · Meeting of July 1, 2026
Somerville's Legislative Matters Committee unanimously advanced two tenant-protection measures and sent a body-camera policy to the full council without a recommendation. Director Schachter of the Office of Housing Stability won 5-0 backing for a home rule petition limiting early lease-renewal demands and a $300-fine ordinance requiring notice before a building sale. Councilor Strezzo called a separate Ethical Procurement Ordinance "doublespeak," while sponsor Councilor Ewen-Kampen said it is "about conduct" rather than foreign policy; a motion for a financial-impact study passed 3-2, then failed 2-3 on reconsideration.
The committee also voted 3-2 to discharge body-worn camera items to the council without recommendation, with Councilor Davis calling the policy "significantly lacking and incomplete," as a state grant covering startup costs expires August 30.
