Somerville Panel Recommends Dissolving Five Long-Defunct City Commissions

Other Committee · Meeting of June 24, 2026

Somerville's Review of Multiple Member Bodies Committee voted 5-0 to recommend dissolving five long-defunct city commissions at its June 24 meeting. Chair Chris Dwan and Vice Chair Rice led the discussion, with Dwan presenting a working document cataloguing more than 30 active and semi-active bodies the panel will examine over coming meetings under a mandate from the city's 2025 revised charter. The five bodies targeted for dissolution are the AIDS Commission, Gang Advisory Board, Multicultural Affairs Commission, Municipal Athletics Facilities Commission, and Recreation and Youth Commission, none of which have had active memberships in recent years.

Vice Chair Rice flagged a desire to ensure the Multicultural Affairs Commission's duties are folded into the Human Rights Commission before any final dissolution, and the committee agreed all preliminary recommendations remain revisable before the final report. The panel also unanimously adopted its first formal rules and norms, resolving a debate over document management in favor of the city's existing AgendaCenter website over a shared digital drive.
