Somerville Historic Commission Approves Walnut Street Garage Demolition 4-0
Other Committee · Meeting of April 21, 2026
Somerville's Historic Preservation Commission cleared the first phase of a multi-step Walnut Street infill project, voting 4-0 to allow demolition of a rear garage at 141-143 Walnut Street. Architect Peter Quinn of Peter Quinn Architects presented the case on behalf of owner Walnut Street 141 Development, LLC and representative Nestor Lemus, explaining that removal of the concrete-block accessory building is a prerequisite for a planned lot split that would make room for a three-story, three-unit building with habitable basement space. Commissioner Denise Price said seeing the preliminary massing renderings "is making it worse for me," but ultimately voted yes alongside Chair Eric Parks, Vice Chair Robin Kelly, and Commissioner Ryan Felvey.
The commission also voted 4-0 to approve a memorandum of agreement governing exterior upgrades at 58 Main Street, where KDI Architecture's Tanya Carrier presented an enhanced mansard roofline and new porch detailing for a three-unit conversion. Both the rear building design and the Walnut Street front-building restoration plan must return to the commission for separate votes.
