Somerville condo board tables Cherry Street permit over tenant pay

Somerville Condo Review Board tables a Cherry Street conversion over unpaid tenant relocation fees. Former tenants Chica and Steve McMorris told the board their landlord never gave proper notice of intent to convert 57A Cherry Street to condos, missing their rights to extend leases, buy their units or receive timely relocation payments. Board staff said an unresolved dispute leaves tenants owed either $12,577 or up to $18,486 per unit depending on which version of the ordinance applies.

Chair Zasloff said he would not vote "even conditionally" until payments are made in full, and the board tabled the application. Separately, the board unanimously cut a two-year tenant notice period to one year for Rhonda Nicolopoulos of 38 Ossipee Road, whose rental property was gutted by an accidental February 2025 fire. Seven other conversion permits passed without debate.
