Somerville Climate Commission Approves Minutes, Gets Purchasing and Composting Updates
Other Committee · Meeting of May 12, 2026
Somerville's Interim Climate Action Commission received updates on three sustainability initiatives at its May 12 meeting. The commission, chaired by Larry Yu and staffed by Office of Sustainability and Environment Director Stephen Nutter and Environmental Policy Manager Kate Bostingham, heard that a $125,000 participatory-budgeting-funded food waste drop-off bin program is in development, with 10 to 15 city-property sites envisioned alongside the ongoing East Somerville curbside pilot. Bostingham said a comprehensive sustainable purchasing policy covering city laptops, vehicles, and event supplies is awaiting the mayor's signature after pressure from a MassDEP grant requirement.
Nutter previewed a package of green building zoning amendments, including deconstruction standards and EV parking requirements, set for Planning Board submission this fall. The commission also debriefed Sustainable Week, with member of the public Monty Allen calling for more energy coaches citywide: "Every house is different and every situation is different, and there's just one Shannon."
