Somerville Scholarship Committee Awards 12 Students, Eyes Process Overhaul for Next Cycle
Other Committee · Meeting of May 14, 2026
Somerville's Municipal Scholarship Committee confirmed 12 recipients of $2,000 scholarships and identified administrative gaps to fix before next year's cycle. At the May 14 Zoom meeting, a committee member identified as Linda, from the city treasurer's office, told the group that the recipient information form does not collect the college-issued student ID number needed to route checks to the correct bursar account, forcing staff member Sarjit to follow up individually with each winner by phone and email. Member Charles volunteered to consolidate the committee's process documents into a single FAQ and updated Google form before the fall.
The committee also agreed to allow applicants to submit essays in their native language, to return to requiring official transcripts as part of the application, and to develop clearer weighted scoring guidelines for the Student Aid Index. Charles flagged that at the current award rate the scholarship fund faces a potential shortfall, and said he would lead a finance discussion at the next meeting, tentatively set for September 17 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.
