Planning Board continues 222 Broadway permit case to April 16

Planning Board · Meeting of March 19, 2026

Somerville Planning Board reviews revised Arts and Innovation District design framework without a vote. Chair Michael Capuano presided as planning staffer Sarah Lewis walked members through an updated Urban Design Framework incorporating feedback from the city's Urban Design Commission, including a proposal to align the district's boundary with existing zoning. Member Coralie Cooper flagged that the framework "could impede the pedestrian and bicycle lanes potentially" by not identifying new loading dock locations.

Vice Chair Amelia Aboff pushed for stronger geothermal and district-energy language, and Clerk Jahan Habib raised preservation questions about the American Tube Works building at 24 Dane Street. The board also continued a 222 Broadway special permit case to April 16 and adjourned by a 7-0 roll call vote after a recess for a joint session with the Land Use Committee.
