Somerville Urban Forestry Committee Approves Minutes, Debates Letter to New Mayor

Somerville's Urban Forestry Committee approved its January minutes and debated a still-unfinished advisory letter to new Mayor Jake Wilson at its February 19 remote meeting. Senior Urban Forester Vanessa Bukkiwi reported that the city exceeded its native plant ordinance requirements in fiscal year 2025, reaching 88.67 percent native in city parks against a 75 percent requirement, 97.9 percent on streetscapes, and 100 percent in bioswales and other city properties, out of more than 15,000 total plants. Tree Warden David detailed a backlog of private tree permit violations, including a $14,000 mitigation payment from 204 Washington Street, and noted that almost no property owners have proactively reported required replanting.

Associate member Rob presented Cambridge intern data on young tree mortality rates across dozens of species, flagging interest in state biodiversity grant opportunities to fund similar tracking in Somerville. A resident identified only as Anne updated the committee on efforts to preserve green space at 90 Washington Street, where a city RFP for a development partner closes April 10, with Miles Byrne of Corcoran Jennison drafting letters to the mayor and a foundation framing roughly one acre of the site at $8 million.
