Somerville panel votes to delay two home demolitions 18 months

Somerville preservation panel delays two demolitions, blesses a retroactive roof job. The Historic Preservation Commission voted 5-0 to find houses at 17 Clyde Street and 30 Vinyl Avenue preferably preserved, starting 18-month delay periods before either owner can seek demolition permits. Neighbor Rajiv Rahman told the board that an adjacent Clyde Street lot, once found preferably preserved, was later demolished anyway after a developer split it in two to dodge the city's affordable housing ordinance, building seven units in the process.

On Vinyl Avenue, resident Ryan McGee said the neighborhood is "currently being ransacked for profit," one of more than half a dozen neighbors who testified against a third proposed teardown on the street in a year. The commission also voted 5-0 to retroactively approve an aluminum slate-look roof at 197 Morrison Avenue, installed before East Coast Metal Roofing's Kyle Keegan realized the home sat in a historic district.
