Somerville Design Panel Reviews Arts District Guidelines, OKs Minutes 4-0
Other Committee · Meeting of March 24, 2026
Somerville design panel pushes city to drop "campus" label from innovation district plan. The Urban Design Commission unanimously approved its February 24 minutes 4-0, then spent the bulk of Tuesday's remote meeting picking apart draft guidelines for the Arts and Innovation Urban Design Framework, which will govern development along Somerville Avenue. Co-Chair Sarah Lewis said the city has deliberately avoided "campus" language, telling members "we've tried not to use the term, um, campus," pointing to the privately-felt park behind Mass General Brigham's Assembly Square building as a cautionary example.
Member Andrew Arbaugh flagged that a proposed 15,000-square-foot civic space duplicates existing Somerville neighborhood-park zoning standards, while Deborah Fennec pushed for guidelines welcoming startups seeking "inexpensive space or co-location space." Tim Tallon proposed new language on building materials and massing variation. Staff will draft a supplemental memo to the Planning Board, which is expected to take up the framework at an upcoming meeting.
