Somerville Commission Unanimously Finds Highland Avenue Home Historically Significant
Other Committee · Meeting of May 5, 2026
Somerville's Historic Preservation Commission found a single-family home at 54 Highland Avenue historically significant, advancing demolition review. The commission voted 4-0 at its May 5 meeting, with Vice Chair Robin Kelly presiding after the chair recused himself as an abutter. The applicant, Neron John Gawley of 54 Highland Avenue LLC, said he acquired the property about a week before the hearing and plans to add density, arguing the circa-1941 Colonial Revival-style house "doesn't really quite go well with the neighboring property." Commissioners disagreed, with Ryan Falvey calling the building's retention of original form and detailing "an intriguing story in and of itself" and Kelly noting its lower roofline lets southern light through and frames views of older homes behind it.
The 4-0 significant finding sends the matter to a second hearing on whether the property should be designated "preferably preserved," which could delay any demolition permit.
