Somerville Board of Health Approves Minutes, Hears Warming Center, OPC Updates

Somerville's warming center is running above its 45-person capacity on the coldest nights, and Director of Health and Human Services Karin Carroll left the February 12 Board of Health meeting early to seek emergency city funds for extended hours and additional food. Carroll, who announced she will be donating a kidney in March with Nikki Spencer, former chief of staff to Mayor Ballantyne, covering in her absence, also reported a spike of five overdoses over a single weekend, three of them fatal, calling it "a huge number for us." Vending machines alone distributed 108 doses of Narcan in the fourth quarter of 2025. Chairman Brian Green, M.D., pushed Carroll and Spencer on the status of the city's long-stalled overdose prevention center effort, and was told state-level legal protections for staff and clients remain the key obstacle despite money already set aside in a stabilization fund across three administrations.

The March meeting will feature a presentation from MAHB's Cheryl Sabara on social marijuana consumption, and Mayor Wilson is expected to attend the April session.
