Somerville's Public Health and Public Safety Committee postponed its Warming Center hearing after a five-alarm fire in Teele Square pulled city staff away from the Oct. 4 meeting. Chair McLaughlin told residents who came to testify the item would return later. DPW Commissioner Eric Wiseman said a roughly 50-address pilot of rubberized trash-barrel latches, which must be "auto-released when the barrels are tipped," had mixed results against rodents and would add about $10 to installing a latch on a $46 toter, near a 20 percent increase.
Division of Community Wellness Director Robinson reported the city's public health vending machines dispensed naloxone 72 times from July through September, including 31 times in July, and that outreach workers counted 31 people sleeping unsheltered and 148 in shelters citywide. The committee voted 3-0 to approve its July 1 minutes and adjourn at 6:37 p.m.
